New Year’s Day is a time of confusion for many of us: we’re still in the period between Christmas merriment and going back to work, we’re not sure what day it is and we might even be feeling a tad on the rough side after what we drank the night before.
However, it doesn’t have to be like that every year and, if you’re staying in the Lake District, New Year’s Day offers you plenty of options when it comes to things to do.
Embark on a walking tour
The Lake District is renowned for its fantastic rambling scene so how could we not let walking take the top spot on our list?
Whether it’s a morning stroll to ease your hangover or a hike up the fells, the Lake District is the perfect location for walks of all kinds and there’s something for everyone: novices, pros, and the whole family.

Delight your taste buds
Just because Christmas is over doesn’t mean it’s the end of delicious food! In fact, New Year’s Day is the perfect chance to have another slap-up meal courtesy of some of the wonderful pubs and restaurants in the area.

Visit the past
Much of England is full to the brim with fascinating history and the Lake District is no exception. New Year’s Day would be the perfect time to visit some of the Lake District’s most famous attractions away from the hustle and bustle of the usual tourist crowds.
A great place to start would be Castlerigg stone circle, a historic site near Keswick which is dated back to the Neolithic period. Made up of 38 stones, Castlerigg stone circle was built as part of a megalithic tradition. The Lake District is full of hidden gems like this, so you have no excuse not to explore during your stay.
Get on your bike
New Year’s Day is all about relaxing and spending some quality time with your loved ones and one of the best ways you can do that in the Lake District is to go for a peaceful bike ride along the quiet country roads.
Off-road riders are welcome too, as the mountain biking scene is huge in the lakes – we particularly recommend the Altura Trail in Whinlatter Forest Park.
Go climbing
Whether you’re a novice or a pro, the Lake District is the ideal location for climbers of all levels of expertise (although, if you’re a novice and you’re going to be out on the crags, make sure that you’re with an experienced climber for safety reasons).
