Civil PArtnership Conversion

Converting your Civil Partnership into a marriage

In England and Wales, from 10th December 2014 you will be able to convert a civil partnership registered in England and Wales to a marriage

The 4 Easy Steps are as follows:

  1. Make an appointment to convert your civil partnership to marriage at any register office in England or Wales. Both you and your civil partner will need to attend so synchronise your diaries and give them a call. You’ll need to say whether you want a simple conversion or if you plan to hold a ceremony.
  2. Make sure you turn up with all the right paperwork. You’ll need your birth certificate, passport or driving licence with photo card, and a recent utility bill, bank statement (or similar) showing your address. Your local registry office will be able to advise on what other forms of identification are acceptable. Don’t forget your civil partnership certificate!
  3. Legally, all you need to do is sign a declaration in the presence of a superintendent registrar or their deputy. It states that you agree to convert your civil partnership to marriage and are happy to become your partner’s lawful husband or wife. If you wish to say the declaration to each other, you can. For the first year from 10 December 2014 this is free for all civil partnerships formed in England or Wales before 29 March 2014. (If you want a marriage certificate this will cost £4, if ordered on the day, or £10 thereafter).
  4. If you wish your conversion to marriage to include a ceremony with new suits, dresses, rings and poems you can (this bit isn’t free!). Ceremonies can be held at the register office, or any building approved for marriage ceremonies e.g. Broadoaks. All you need to do is book the date with us, and also book the superintendent registrar. All pricing packages are per our standard brochure that can be downloaded if you click here.
  5. If you do not want to have a big exclusive doo, why not just have your conversion appointment at your local registry office and then come and spend the night with us? We always have offers running that include afternoon tea on arrival, and a 4 course dinner for two, with spa access and a late checkout. As a little extra we will greet you both with a celebratory glass of champagne on your arrival.
